ACR Asia-Pacific Conference Update Given the recent unfortunate incidents in Mumbai last week, we know you are likely to be concerned. We want to keep you informed about developments on the ground, and precautions that are being taken to ensure heightened security arrangements at the venue. First, the city of Hyderabad is about 500 miles away from Mumbai. The city is calm and determined to get back to business-as-usual as one of India’s vibrant technology centers. In fact, Nov 30th, Sunday morning, the annual ‘Hyderabad 10K and Half Marathon’ witnessed 30,000 runners and many more viewers gather together for a solidarity run. The security at the airport and within the city has been strengthened substantially. Second, we are taking all precautions to ensure heightened security arrangements at the venue. The Indian School of Business is a self-contained campus which is 10 miles from the city. At the time of the conference, school will be in session, with over 500 MBA students and 30 plus faculty calling the campus their home. The campus has its own perimeter, with trained security guards at the gate. The Chief Minister of the State of Andhra Pradesh, where Hyderabad is situated, has been approached and he has promised extra security at the venue, as well as at the hotels and residences where participants will be staying. Third, we are taking strength from similar high profile conferences which have decided to proceed as scheduled. Cases in point are the SMS conference at ISB this weekend, United Nations Internet Governance Forum 2008 in Hyderabad (December 3 – 6, 2008), TiE Entrepreneurial Summit 2008 in Bangalore (Dec 16-18, 2008) and the IIT Alumni 2008 Global Conference in Chennai (Dec 19-21, 2008). These are very high profile events, each drawing anywhere from 1500 - 3000 delegates and eminent speakers from around the globe, including Nobel laureates. We realize that it is your decision to attend. We are determined not to let an act of terrorism destroy the exchange of thoughts and ideas in a free democracy. You may also want to monitor the travel warning/alert available at the US Department of State web page (http://travel.state.gov/) to obtain up-to-date information. Due to enhanced security, we may request everyone to pre-register for the conference. Further information about pre-registration will be communicated as soon as possible. We look forward to welcoming you to the conference at Hyderabad. The site has been designed to assist authors and reviewers to function in a paperless manner.
